Description

The Argo Class submersible aircraft carrier was designed by the Free Worlds League for use on their numerous water-rich worlds. The ship was designed principclly as a mobile airbase for conventional and aerospace fighters. The ship is also designed to serve in a number of secondary roles. Which include mobile fire support for land forces, while using its aircraft for air superiority and to bombard enemy units.[1]

Though the ships faired well during first 20 years of service. Some Argos did not fair well during the Jihad. At least two ships of the class were lost to air strikes conducted against them while submerged. Due to the threat of naval grade weaponry being fired down against them, Argos were unable to surface and launch their compliment of aircraft in defence against anti-submarine weaponry.[2]

Armament

The ships mount 6 Long Tom batteries in two turrets (number 5 and 6). While Long range undersea firepower includes its eight massive batteries of twenty-tube Long Range Torpedo launchers, while backed up by a pair of short-range torpedos and a mixed cluster of extended range lasers mounted on all sides.[3]

Aircraft

The vessel carries eighteen fighter craft.

Cargo

Primary variant carries 9,517.5 tons standard, with loading door mounted in its rear. Also the ship designed to carry forty passengers.

Variants

Only known named variant is strategic attack ship. This variant includes long-range surface-to-surface missile arrays.

Note: There are no record sheet that exists for this variant. It is only mentioned as one of many unnamed variants in the original fluff.

Notable Ships

  • SNS Snake River - Purchased by the Kraken Unleashed mercenary unit (with some arm twisting and backroom deals) from the Free Worlds League's San Nicolas Navy, the ship was scheduled to be scuttled after being severly damaged in raid by the Hegemony in 3065. The ship was transported in three main section to the Capellan world of Principia in 3069. The ship was put into service next year, employing the local militia's MechBuster squadron and Oscars. The ship was used by the Krakens and militia against a raid by the newly formed First Andurien Rangers in 3071. The ship was used to harass the Rangers, with its compliment of militia fighters, and by deploying the Kraken's Mermen special ops personnel along the coast of island on which the First Andurien Rangers had landed. The Andurien morale broke after receiving unexpected air attacks and they departed the planet. The ship is semi-operational due to parts shortages, and thus only able submerge for short periods of time. The Capellan militia hopes that Kraken Unleashed will sell the ship to them so they can retain it as part of their defense forces.[4]

Notes

The design features Submersible and Armored Chassis and Control Modifications, single MASH Unit with eight operating theaters, 18 fighter bays, communication equipment, and advanced fire-control system guide the ships weaponary. The Long Toms and flight deck can not be operated while submerged.
