The Magellan-class Free Spirit was the first command of future Explorer Corps Director Padraig O Bhaoil.

One of many Magellan-class JumpShips constructed since 2960 to assist the exploration efforts of the ComStar Explorer Corps, in 3041 the Free Spirit came under the command of Precentor Padraig O Bhaoil. O Bhaoil's extensive experience and knowledge of JumpShip operations along with his stern but amiable nature earned him the trust and loyalty of the crew.[1][2][3]
In 3048 the Free Spirit departed on an extended three-year mission in the region spinward of the Inner Sphere, arriving back at Baliggora in the Outworlds Alliance in late 3051 shortly before the Battle of Luthien. Shocked and appalled by news of the Clan Invasion, the Free Spirit sped to Terra as fast as possible, arriving in late January 3052.[1][2][3]
Pressed into service transporting Com Guard units to Tukayyid, the Free Spirit and its crew would remain and witness the Battle of Tukayyid from the system's nadir Jump Point, ready to evacuate the wounded or carry word of the battle's outcome to other worlds. Upon the ComStar Schism, Precentor O Bhaoil would reluctantly give up the command of the Free Spirit after Primus Sharilar Mori selected him to the post of Director for the entire Explorer Corps in 3053.[1][2][3]
