Matthew Covenant was a veteran with twenty years of experience of the mercenary life when he decided to form his own unit Covenant's Commandos. He claims that he discovered his unique DFN-3C aboard a derelict DropShip on New Valencia.[1]
He was still leading the unit when they helped AFFS forces in the defense of New Avalon during the Jihad.
His unit survived the Jihad still under Federated Suns employ when it was sent to protect the mining facilities on Cammal. A combined-arms force of pirates attacked the planet, and the unit user a pair of Arbalests to harass them, buying time for Matthew to reposition the unit and to catch and destroy them piecemeal.[2]

Matthew Covenant piloted a Defiance DFN-3C (to be precise DFN-3C-002).[1]
