Never Trust the Recruitment Posters is a short story by James Kirtley that was published in the twelfth issue of Shrapnel. It was continued in Six Months on the Float.
Plot summary
The 1 June 3025, a young MechWarrior, Leonidas Simonides, went to Galatea expecting to became a professional mercenary, searching for job, but without too much success. He soon learned than reality was muchg different of what he expected, and his small 'Mech didn't help him much to be recruited, and his limited discipline didn't make him impress potential recruiters. He meet a Carlyle, implied to be the famous Grayson Carlyle, but Leonidas think he was too young, and didn't took him seriously. And as he wasn't able to sday why he wanted to be a MechWarrior didn't help him much. Eventually, a desperate Leonidas ends signing for the single unit which was interested on him, a man named Lucius which wanted to form a like mercenary cooperative. Leonidas joined his newly born unit, meeting his chief tech. When the unit departed to a first job, implied to be a pirate hunting, Simonides fels himself like he was really part of something, and knew he has found what he really was looking for.
