Description

The Spad was a staple, light AeroSpace Fighter used before the fall of the Star League.

Armament & Capabilities

The Spad was considered one of the best AeroSpace Fighters of the Star League-era, not simply for its maneuverability, but also its ease of maintenance. The Spad was designed such that it was possible to reach, repair and replace every component, including the engine, with a minimum of down time. Unlike other AeroSpace Fighters and BattleMechs, the layout of the interior also allowed for quick replacement of any damaged or destroyed component with similar components, no matter the manufacturer. Not quite as versatile as modular OmniTechnology used OmniFighters, this system still allowed for shortened repair times and the freedom to stock spare parts from virtually any supplier.

The fighter is also armed exclusively with energy weapons, reducing its dependence on supply lines. Though interchangeable with other suppliers, newly constructed Spads were armed with a StarCutter PPC, an Allied Technologies Model 2 Medium Laser, and an Allied Technologies Model 1 Small Laser. The placement of the Small Laser increased drag during atmospheric re-entry, so a protective cowling extends to cover the weapon during the first moments within the atmosphere.

In a variation on Stealth technology used in 21st century conventional fighters, the Spad also features a wing geometry which rather than reduces radar signature, projects "echoes", confusing some tracking systems - projecting false targets or appearing as a different, much larger class of AeroSpace Fighter.
