BattleTechWiki talk:Project Portals/Portal Prototype

It's getting there[edit]

I am currently working on how portals well work on BTW and I have the concept page, the very in progress page for Portal:BattleMechs, and importing all the templates needed as you can see here {{Portal_templates_navbox}} --Deadfire (talk) 18:25, 9 March 2023 (EST)

I just read your concept page. I think our ideas of the concept and motivation of a portal are similar. Much of my thinking was influenced by recently reading Wikipedia's page about portals, though I have mixed thoughts about some of the Wikipedia portal examples. I am definitely interested to see what tools/templates you are developing. --Dude RB (talk) 20:41, 9 March 2023 (EST)

Fiction Portal[edit]

A conversation about a fiction portal was started in Talk:List of BattleTech Print Novels and Anthologies#Removing Print from Print Novels and Anthologies and is now being continued here.

Frabby, here are some answers to your questions

1) The terms portal, landing page, and masthead are all fairly similar. I used the term landing page for Miniatures simply as I wanted to communicate that it had a different style from what I would normally envision for a full portal. In particular, the inclusion of a category tree/map is something I think a full portal would include but which is not present in Miniatures. But portals will likely have differing styles. In addition to BattleTechWiki:Spacecraft Portal, two other portals are BattleTechWiki:BattleMech Portal and BattleTechWiki:Combat Vehicle Portal. Those portals are very directory-ish in terms of style. My vision of a portal for fiction is that it would incorporate a brief bit of overview or commentary to introduce a reader to the area.

2) Please do feel free to edit/refine this page. Part of the purpose for creating this page is to create a testbed for discussion. (Sometimes it is easier to show than to tell.) I think that we should create a Fiction Portal but also a Product Portal, so this page has both in mind. The various italic statements at the beginning of each section are a way to communicate the intention or purpose of the section so that it could be ported over to a different context such as products. But please do fill in what would seem appropriate for the example of fiction.

One further note: User:Deadfire is working on a Portal template. I don't know what the final implementation will look like, but I think this current test/prototype page should still help in discussing the concept and content. --Dude RB (talk) 08:19, 10 March 2023 (EST)
