Michael Hinders was a senior officer in the Fourth Royal Guards during the Second Succession War.[1]

History[edit]

Major Hinders, serving under his brother Colonel Tiber Hinders, was dispatched to New Caledonia when it came under attack from the Draconis Combine in 2841. While the Lyran soldiers fought tenaciously against a superior foe, bad odds and suspicious incidents indicative of a spy within the Fourth Royal's ranks lead to the collapse of organized military resistance by 2843. Michael lead several actions during the initial fighting, including the defense of the capital city of Redfev and the failed relief of the city of New Berwick. A return to full-scale military operations in late 2844 after Colonel Tiber was informed that reinforcements would continue to be unavailable for the Fourth Royals met with several successes but by 2846 the defense of New Caledonia was officially doomed.[1]

When Michael's brother Tiber was finally captured in 2848, he was brought before Kuritan commander Hugai Kurita and told that the Fourth Royal's defeat had indeed been due to a spy feeding intelligence to the Combine forces over the years. Tiber leapt at the chance to kill said spy in a BattleMech duel, emerging victorious at the cost of a fatal dose of radiation from a breach in his 'Mech's fusion reactor. However, Hugai's final cruel trick was revealed when Tiber removed the spy's cockpit to reveal Michael's corpse, shattering what remained of the colonel's will right before he was executed by Hugai.[1]

While the truth of Michael's treason would never be revealed, with the idea that his placement in the duel was simply part of Hugai's sick joke never being confirmed or denied, the ramifications of the Hinders brothers' fratricide would be severe for the Combine. When the insane Archon Claudius Steiner received Hugai's footage of the brothers' fatal duel, he set into play personal attacks against both Hugai and his father Coordinator Yoguchi Kurita that would become some of the most enduring acts of the entire Succession Wars Era.[1]
