Talk:Jackie Darwin

Gender[edit]

It is worth noting that "Jackie" is a gender-neutral name in English, being derived from "Jack" and also "Jacqueline". Tamar Rising makes no mention of Jackie Darwin's gender, so we should stick to gender-neutral until more shows up.--Talvin (talk) 21:55, 18 June 2022 (EDT)

Very good point, In the UK it is pretty much a female exclusive name, "Jack" meaning Robert here. But from what I have seen in films and TV in America is possibly a commonish name for men.--Dmon (talk) 22:01, 18 June 2022 (EDT)
Robert?! I have learned something new today. I have never seen those two names connected, though "Jack" is commonly seen as a nickname for "John". "Jack Ryan", Tom Clancy's best-known character, was canonically John Patrick Ryan, Sr. KCVO (Hon.) Huh.--Talvin (talk) 22:05, 18 June 2022 (EDT)
It is something that I think I only ever encounter in people of the WWI & WWII generation there are a few names that are so common they have about a dozen alternate names, (John, Robert, Wiliam and Edward being the ones I can think of off the top of my head). Jack in perticular seemingly used almost as a universal substitute. Also interestingly in the UK I do not think I have ever met anybody who uses the .sr and .jr suffixes that seem to be common in the US, instead people just adopted a different name. I did the ancestry thing a few years ago and was quite shocked to discover that most of my great uncles had totally different names to what I grew up thinking.--Dmon (talk) 06:32, 19 June 2022 (EDT)
