TriFil

Description[edit]

TriFil was a water purification system developed by the Star League by 2618 that, along with other purification technologies like the Jamerson-Ulikov Water Purifier, enabled the colonization of many formerly uninhabitable worlds, spawning a new age of territorial expansion throughout the entire known galaxy.[1]

Despite water being the staple of life, relatively few Inner Sphere worlds had enough usable water to prosper. Previously, the iceships of the Ryan Cartel had been the standard since the twenty-second century, making early colonization possible by transporting mountains of ice to worlds in desperate need of water.[2][3] When the Star League contracted Curtiss Hydroponics in 2618 to manufacture and distribute the TriFil systems, the corporation's assets skyrocketed tenfold in half a century. By 2668, the advancements in water purification technology made iceships the more expensive option and Ryan Cartel nearly went bankrupt until bought out by Curtiss.[1]

After the Amaris Civil War concluded and the Star League was disbanded shortly after, the patent to the TriFil process became the property of Curtiss Hydroponics.[4] Sensing war on the horizon, Curtiss pumped its profits into amassing a vast stockpile of essential chemicals and replacement parts, even reinvesting in new iceships which hadn't been done in nearly two centuries. During the Succession Wars, water purification production facilities became military targets, yet due to the stockpiling, 70–80% of Marik worlds remained supplied with pure water.[1]

When the original TriFil parts and supplies were depleted and the technology to recreated them lost with time, Curtiss learned how to jury-rig the purifier system, creating their own modest version called the MultiFil. This became the standard on many Free Worlds League worlds.[5] In the meantime, iceships continued to be in relied upon well into the thirty-first century, with Curtiss maintaining a fleet of fifty-one vessels by 3067 and was the sole lifeline to over a dozen League worlds along with a few Capellan worlds on occasion.[2][5]
