Overview
A Reinforced Weapons Bunker (RWB) was one of the largest standard weapons emplacements constructed to protect a Castle Brian. RWBs were constructed to protect direct approaches to the Castle Brian or other key transit points such as bridges and mountain passes.[1]
Description
These bunkers sacrificed a measure of durability in order to ease their construction, but were nevertheless strong enough to withstand repeated hits from capital weapons. They also contained enough weaponry to hold off an entire regiment under the right circumstances, were fully self-contained with sufficient provisions to withstand long sieges, even if the main Castle Brian fell, and had no exterior entrance points, extending a further two levels below ground for storage and access tunnels to other parts of the Castle Brian. Those RWBs which were destroyed in combat were as the result of either orbital or nuclear bombardment.[1]
Armaments
The RWB was designed to face a primary direction where most of its weaponry was concentrated. Forward-facing turrets were equipped with heavy batteries of direct-fire, long-range weapons, while the interior of the building contained indirect-fire or capital-scale weapons. These were typically conventional systems like Long Toms or anti-aircraft-tasked Thumpers and Arrow IVs, although the Word of Blake would retrofit many RWBs with large Cruise Missile batteries. Two smaller turrets in the center of the RWB were dedicated to anti-aerospace defense. Small weapon blisters pockmarked the exterior of the structure, protecting it from direct assault, while targeting lasers allowed nearby RWBs to provide supporting defensive fire with Arrow IV Homing Missiles.[1]
Variants
Capital-class RWBs replaced one or more artillery turrets with a Naval Laser 55 or paired Killer Whale/Barracuda launchers and were used to defend Castles Brian within the Terran Hegemony and on Terra itself. Remote or isolated RWBs would replace one of their anti-aircraft turrets with a Helipad and remove storage and crew quarters for two interior hangars, allowing visiting VTOLs to be more easily serviced.[1]
