Description
The D40 Communication Satellite is a small communication satellite utilized by the military of the House Steiner. Produced out of the need for a disposable but cost effective communication satellite for ground forces. House Steiner pressed to have a satellite produced after the events of the Clan Invasion, where they found ground forces means communicate vulnerable to disruption. Prior to the Clan's, Lyran forces lines of communication methods were improvised by coordinating their ground forces communication various means. Forces were using various means of relaying orders from hardwire communications to specialized aerospace vehicles in orbit. All these methods were expensive and all vulnerable to disrupted and possibly destroyed during the course of any given operations that they were engaged in while their parent formations lead to losses and possibly total destruction of a combat force.
The D40 were first prototyped in 3064, where it came to use in the FedCom Civil War. Due to it's size a small shuttle or Aerospace Fighter could deploy one to provide encrypted comms to friendly ground units while it's self is intended to work with other D40s providing coverage across the globe. While individual units are not expected to survive no more than few days over conflict zone with active aerospace forces.[1][2]
Equipment and Capabilities
Designed to be inexpensive and disposable, the D40 is small lightly built on a Ultra-Light Chassis. Virtually unarmored due to it's envisioned disposable nature, the majority of it's tonnage it dedicated to the 2 metric tons of Communication Equipment while non-reflective black paint cover's its hull to reduce it's visual signatures. It's solar array provides unlimited power to the D40's system, also makes the vehicle detectable to enemy Aerospace assets.[1][2]
