Description
The Heavy Mortar is a type of smooth-bore indirect fire artillery light enough to be carried by infantry. It fires a finned shell, which is propelled into the air on an arching trajectory by a small charge ignited by a firing pin inside the mortar. Heavy mortars are operated by a crew of three, the crew commander, a gunner and a loader, and can fire a variety of shells such as anti-personnel, flares, gas and stun. Depending on the weapon, these shells range from 100mm to 150mm in diameter, with crews normally carrying a supply of one hundred into battle. Because of their method of firing, heavy mortars suffer from having a minimum range.[1]
