Johnny Tessel had experience as IndustrialMech pilot and as a poacher when he was conscripted into a militia from the slums of Rolfshire on the Draconis Combine world of Pike IV for the War of 3039 where his IndustrialMech battalion was destroyed in short order by attacking Lyran Commonwealth forces, being used as cannon fodder by the Fifth Sword of Light. He subsequently stole a Panther from the Fifth's maintenance gantries and downed an attacking Lyran TDR-5SS Thunderbolt with a cockpit hit from his PPC.[1]
This action was observed by Hansen's Roughriders, a mercenary unit in Lyran employ whose contract was just expiring. As they retreated from Pike IV, they helped Tessel salvage the Thunderbolt and gave him a billet in one of their heavy companies.[1]
Tessel would continue to demonstrate his proficiency with PPC headshots during the Roughriders' only other known combat deployment over the following decade, a pirate-hunting campaign on Venaria, and thereby became known as a notable pilot of the Thunderbolt[1] (implicitly, the PPC-carrying TDR-5SS subvariant).
