On July 7, 3055, the Draconis Combine and the Explorer Corps staged a daring raid against the Clan Smoke Jaguar command post on Luzerne. This raid saw the first combat for the new Okinawa-class DropShip. The DCS Ashi-oto took heavy damage during the rearguard action and lost more than half its fighter complement, but it managed to inflict enough damage on the Congress-class CSJ Hunters' Pride that it was forced to withdraw. The outcome of this raid added considerably to the Inner Sphere's knowledge of Clan equipment, particularly their naval vessels. As a result of this bravery, most of the pilots were decorated and Captain Hiyama of the Ashi-oto was awarded the Bushido Blade.[1][2]
Chu-i Alexander Shimoto was commanding the Second Aero Lance of the Third Aero Company aboard the Ashi-oto. Shimoto and his Sai aerospace fighter destroyed three OmniFighters before engaging the Hunters' Pride with several strafing runs even after losing a wingman and sustaining severe damage from the WarShip's anti-fighter defenses. As one of the few survivors of the Ashi-oto's fighter complement he was decorated for bravery after his return.[3]
