Plot summary

Having gained the initiative over the Ryuken-ichi regiment in the fighting in the city of Cerant on An Ting, Wolf's Dragoons have begun their final attack to push the enemy forces off-planet. A small ad-hoc force of fast units under Captain Dechan Fraser spearheads the advance behind enemy lines in hopes of delivering a decapitation blow against the enemy HQ before they can evacuate. Their advance grinds to a halt just short of their objective, however, and Dragoon MechWarrior Thomas West finds a cunning enemy in a lowly 15-ton SecurityMech to be their most dangerous opponent on the urban battlefield. Although his own 'Mech is disabled, West recalls his secret Clan heritage in the end instead of admitting defeat and calls down indirect LRM fire on his opponent, destroying him.

Ultimately, three Dragoon 'Mechs (at least) are disabled or destroyed while buying an opportunity for Fraser's damaged Shadow Hawk to punch through and proceed towards Government House on Central Square (leading directly to his assault on Jerry Akuma as described in the novel).
