The Whirlwind has thus far only appeared in ''[[BattleTechnology]]'', which at the time was considered a source of canon for the BattleTech universe. However, ''BattleTechnology'' is no longer considered a source of canon by the current BattleTech developers, and as such, the Whirlwind can no longer be considered a canonical design.

Description[edit]

Initially designed as a dual role vehicle suited for use as an Anti-Aircraft Escort and IFV, the Whirlwind spent most of its time as a long range patrol or cavalry vehicle as the shielding on its original Vlar 125 engine made infantry transport uncomfortable at best.[1] The original design has been in use since at least 3027 when the Draconis Combine attempted to probe House Davion defenses during Operation Galahad exercises. The more modern variants fulfill the initial design roles for a hybrid AA/IFV through the replacement of the 125 engine with a DAV 170.[1]

Armament[edit]

The Whirlwind is armed with a pair of turret-mounted Autocannon/2s, fed by two tons of ammunition stored safely within the hull of the vehicle. Backing these guns up is a pair of medium lasers, also contained within the turret. This armament coupled with the Whirlwind's speed allows a Whirlwind to keep at range from most enemies and pepper them with autocannon fire. The Whirlwind also has a half ton cargo bay to transport infantry.[2]

Variants[edit]

  • IFV
This variant replaces the initial 125 fusion engine with a DAV 170. It also removes the original's AC/2's and replaces them with Light AC/2's carrying a single ton of ammunition protected by CASE. The twin Medium Lasers are upgraded to ER Medium Lasers and a Beagle Active Probe is added. More importantly, this variant has a 4 ton Infantry Bay allowing the Whirlwind to carry infantry into battle.[1] BV (2.0) = 756[3]
  • AAA
This variant removes the AC/2 armament in favor of mounting twin LB 2-X AC's along with ER Medium Lasers in place of the original mediums. The LBX cannons are fed by CASE protected ammunition bins carrying two tons of cluster ammunition and two tons of slug ammunition. Notably this variant does not fit space for any infantry or cargo. BV(2.0) = 811 [4]
