Prelude[edit]
In 3011 the Lyran Commonwealth world of Sevren was garrisoned by the two regiments of Winfield's Guards. Despite the ongoing Draconis Combine offensive in the region, Lyran intelligence predicted Sevren would be bypassed.[1][2]
Overview[edit]
The intelligence proved faulty however, and several Guard ’Mechs were caught unawares in a mountain pass and subjected to heavy bombardment. Only two Guards survived that encounter, the brother-sister scout team of Lewan and Cynth Tulmani. Both of their BattleMechs were heavily damaged. Able to see that the capital city to their east was burning, they elected to turn west in order to find either a city still in Lyran hands, or other survivors. Traveling at night to avoid detection they finally entered a city still in Lyran hands just in time to witness the landing of the 2nd Donegal Guards. Both of the Tulmani's immediately volunteered to scout for the Donegal forces through the unfamiliar countryside to strike back against the Combine invaders.[1][2]
At this same battle, the father of Salome Ward was piloting the family Marauder for the Guards, only to have it destroyed.[3]
Aftermath[edit]
From that point onward, Winfield scouts wear the green tartan stripe of the Donegal Guards on their lapels in honor of the Tulmani's courage.
At some other time in 3011, perhaps following this battle in an attempt to prey of weakened defenders, the forces of Hendrik Grimm III raided the world but were pushed back. This raid was notable as a textbok example of how ’Mechs with rear firing weapons like the Archer and Ostsol can utilize self-provided covering fire.[4] Henrick III attacks and retreats[5]
Notes[edit]
Mr. Ward's presence with the Guards in 3011 initially fit the timeline as Salome graduated a "year and a half" later, became the Liaison Officer for the Kell Hounds and was immediately assigned the rank of Major by Morgan Kell in time for her 15 June 3012 engagement on Castor in the Lowering the Boom scenario. However, a subsequent reprinting of that scenario for BattleCorps changed the date to 7 June 3011, which breaks the timeline as far as the Ward Marauder is concerned. This could be rectified with her graduation date being 6 months away instead of 18.
