As a part of the Tikonov Lancers brigade, the Third Tikonov Lancers can claim a line of direct descent from some of the first military units to be formed outside of the Terran Alliance.[1] The Third Lancers served the Tikonov Grand Union and continued to serve after the Grand Union joined the newly-formed Capellan Confederation.[1]

Age of War[edit]

As a result of the political machinations of Prime Minister Selek Tucas of the Capellan Commonality the Tikonov Grand Union renounced the Almach Accords signed in 2345 and demanded that the Federated Suns cede all former Chesteron Trade Federation worlds to the Tikonov Grand Union. Tucas immediately declared the Capellan Commonality's support for the Grand Union claims, and by the end of 2363 Tucas had assembled a task force consisting of the cream of the military formations of the Tikonov Grand Union, Capellan Commonality and the St. Ives Mercantile League for a strike against the world of Lee. Two regiments of the Tikonov Lancers, the First and the Third, were amongst those forces deployed, fighting alongside the Capellan Reserve Cavalry, Moorcock's Rangers, Seluk's Principia, Seneca's Fusiliers and Tucas' household guards.[2]

The offensive was a disaster, with Reynard Davion receiving advance warning of the attack - a warning which evidence suggests was issued by Premiere Alexi Nimzovich of the Sarna Supremacy, a nation within the Capellan Zone with a history of conflict with all three allied nations. As a result of that warning eight regiments of crack Federated Peacekeeping Forces troops were waiting on Lee alongside the existing defenders, and the bulk of the task force - including the Third - was either systematically wiped out or heavily damaged in what proved to be the end of Tucas' political career and the beginning of a Federated Suns campaign that cost the allied nations a number of worlds.[3]

Following the rise to power of Franco Liao with the formation of the Capellan Confederation the Tikonov Lancers were purged along with the other military units of the Tikonov Grand Union as Franco Liao attempted to remove the influence of the former Tikonov Tetrarchs and the sheng nobility from their former armed bands. Liao's efforts met with varying degrees of success, but were perhaps least successful when it came to the Third Lancers.[1]

Star League Era[edit]

The Third Lancers were one of eight regiments within the Tikonov Lancers by 2765, at which point the Capellan Confederation was in the process of rapidly rebuilding its armed forces. No Capellan Confederation Armed Forces units outside the Tikonov Lancers could claim the five centuries of martial history and tradition that the various Lancer regiments enjoyed; in common with the other Lancers regiments, the Third was also more rigid in their doctrine and inflexible in character than the units of other CCAF brigades, a direct consequence of the huge emphasis played on maintaining continuity with the heritage and traditions of the Lancers.[1]

During the Star League era the Third Lancers were the regiment where the former Tikonov nobility remained the most influence and control, despite the earlier efforts of Franco Liao and the CCAF. The senior officers of the Third continued to enforce a practise of ensuring that only those descended from the hereditary Tikonov nobility were accepted into the Third, which had earned the regiment the nickname "The Blood of the Boyars".[1]
