Without Warning is a short story by Kevin Casing that was published in the twelfth issue of Shrapnel.
Plot summary[edit]
3023. In the settlement of Vannas, in the Silvan Basin of planet Verthandi, Abel Tapper, a young AgroMech pilot, is forced to watch the execution of his village's mayor by a Draconis Combine trooper. As the populace is rounded up by the Draconis militia, a farmer resists and a Dervish BattleMech destroys his house. Any captives attempting to escape are gunned down. However, a second militia 'Mech pilot, in a Locust, is not so enthusiastic to participate in the slaughter and switches sides when a group of rebels attacks the Kuritans. Abel sees his opportunity, escaping and running to his AgroMech. Determined to defend his village against the Combine kill squad, he assists the Locust. Coordinating between them, they manage to down the Dervish, and the Locust pilot destroys its cockpit. Razor, the female pilot of the Locust, congratulates Abel for his actions, before going silent. When the victorious rebels reach Abel, they find Razor dead in the Locust's cockpit and then ask him to join them. Young Abel agrees, and uses his AgroMech to drag the salvaged Dervish towards the rebel base, determined to make the Combine pay for their actions.
