This article is about the secret deep-space installation. For the nearby secret naval base that was often mistaken for Freedom Station and even colloquially called thus, see Luyten 68-28.

Freedom Station was a system, or rather a deep space installation in or near what was otherwise frequently described as a "nameless" system with an F3-class star in the "Epsilon"-Terra Firma-Sheratan triangle[1] (it remains unclear if the reference is to Epsilon Eridani or Epsilon Indi) and described to lie 10.72 light-years rimward of Epsilon Indi.[2]

The installation was a refueling and recharge station that was moved to this random point in space by the Star League Defense Force in response to the Amaris Coup. Its location was kept secret at least throughout the liberation; afterwards, it served as a recharge station for civilian traffic. The Capellan Confederation and the Federated Suns both used it in the First and Second Succession War until the latter destroyed the recharge station, rendering the installation worthless and soon forgotten.[2]

Luyten 68-28, the much bigger secret SLDF naval base from where the SLDF surveillance vessels operated, is close to Freedom Station. The existence of this base had been suspected, and outsiders apparently had a hard time keeping these distinct secret bases apart.[2]

Notes

  • The safe proximity limit for an F3-class star, i.e. the minimal jump point distance from the star, is around 5.51 billion kilometers.[3] It therefore seems almost impossible that a deep space facility could be a mere 17 million kilometers from the star, so Freedom Station was presumably 17 million kilometers further out from the star's nadir jump point.
