Angry colonists stormed the spaceport and despite heavy casualties, they seized the shipments and sabotaged the ships so that the shipments could never be sent to Earth. The Grain Rebellion, much like the Boston Tea Party centuries before on Earth, was an action by the people of New Avalon against the unreasonable orders of the Terran Alliance to supply the Alliance with grain.
History
As the Terran Alliance was desperately trying to quell various uprisings in the colonies, in 2237 the Alliance Parliament ordered all loyal worlds to increase their production of materials and resources to cover it's losses.
On New Avalon, protesting the new quotas, the people tore down and burned the Alliance pronouncements. The people were barely able to produce enough food for themselves let alone the starving billions of Earth. Governor-General Emil Varnay decided to obey his orders from the Parliament instead of listening to his advisers and ordered his military forces to gather the shipments and escort them to the spaceport.

Due to the political upheavals already underway between the Liberal and Expansionist Parties of the Alliance, Varnay was unable to effect any change or response to the rebellion on New Avalon. Varnay was quietly retired.
Celebration
Grain Rebellion Day is still celebrated on New Avalon with parties, costumes and reenactments. The children play "Rangers 'n Bandits" and the adults hold feasts and parties similar to ancient Mardi Gras. Solemn speeches and religious observances are held by the politicians and priests in honor of the souls that died in the Rebellion.
