Plot summary[edit]
The story features Johnny Mace, a MechWarrior and independent mercenary. The poorly-educated and poorly-mannered STG-3R Stinger pilot stumbles his way through a meeting with a sort of "temp agency" for independent mercenaries ("Leech Contractors and Negotiators") on Galatea, the Mercenary's Star, and accepts a poorly paid (it is implied) six-month garrison contract with the planetary government of Here to defend against pirates.
