Description
The Manta is a Fast Attack Submarine that was originally created for the Star League Defense Force's Royal CAAN Regiments. The design part SLDF's need for quick responses to undersea threats. The ship was teamed with the larger Moray Heavy Attack Submarine in some of its missions.
The ship deployed by the SLDF through out the Star League's Terran Hegemony, was later used as part of resistance to Stephan Amaris's occupation. The Mantra along with its bigger cousin, Moray were devastated by the conflict and later extinct in Inner Sphere by end of the Succession Wars. Remaining survivors of the Class were only found on Terra, which were decommissioned by their new owner, ComStar. The design was resurrected by Word of Blake in 3070s, when they were deployed with Morays to provide escort support for new Wyrm SDS Submersible Fortresses.[2] After the liberation of Terra, the ships were used by Devlin Stone's Allied Coalition hunt down remaining rogue Wyrm controlled by the Blakist. The ship was later retained in service of Republic of the Sphere's Armed Forces to continue provide support for the remaining Wyrms.
The Mantra's focus is on speed, where its 320 Rated Extra Light Fusion Engine allows the ship go to speeds of 119 kph. However, the near 18 ton engine took majority of the mass of the ship. The ship is protected by 9 tons of Ferro-Fibrous Armor, with large portion of it found in front of the ship. The Manta was conceived to conduct high speed passes, instead of slugging it out with its target.[3]
Armament
The weapons load was limited, due to its large engine. The weapons mounted in its nose, which includes a single ER Large Laser and 6-tubed Short-Ranged Torpedo Launcher. The ship's torpedo launcher, only has single ton of ammunition.[4]
Variants
- Mantra (Support) - A Republic of the Sphere design, this ship was created to support the original Mantra and Moray. Designed as Medium Fire Support vessel, the ship exchanges Manta's original weapons for pair of ER Medium Lasers and a single 15-tubed LRT Launcher. BV(2.0)=????[5]
