Montague Van Castille was the commanding officer of the Ninth Marik Militia as of 3014.[1]

History[edit]

Colonel Van Castille commanded the Ninth Marik Militia on Nova Roma when the world came under attack from the Fourth Regulan Hussars, Third Ducal Guard, and sizable force of Wolf's Dragoons in 3014. Caught unprepared by the outbreak of Anton's Revolt, Van Castille was quickly distracted by the Dragoons' probing attacks and failed to stop the capture of Nova Roma's governing cabinet by the mercenaries' special forces. After the now-imprisoned government ordered Nova Roma's defenders to lay down their arms, Van Castille chose to abandon the planet and fell back to Emris IV.[1]

Regrouping with the Sixth Marik Militia and Emris IV's local defenders, Van Castille's soldiers took up positions in the planetary capital and placed Emris' government under protective custody to avoid a repeat of Nova Roma. When Anton Marik's forces arrived in-system to take the valuable industrial world, the Ninth Militia was once again pitted against a mixed group of Wolf's Dragoons. Van Castille's soldiers put up a fierce resistance, utilizing the capital city's antiquated architecture to their advantage and slowing the advancing mercenaries' BattleMechs to a crawl. The tide turned when the Dragoons' Captain Alicia Fancher used combined-arm tactics to overrun numerous Militia strong-points, forcing the Ninth Marik out of the city and ultimately forcing Van Castille to retreat to off-world to Vanra.[2]

Once again fighting beside the Sixth Marik Militia, with the addition of the First Orloff Grenadiers, Van Castille's troops came under renewed attack from Wolf's Dragoons in January 3015. Having been defeated by the Dragoons twice, Van Castille's grasp of Dragoon tactics allowed his troops to hold their positions outside the city of Sofia. When the Fourth Regulan Hussars betrayed Wolf's Dragoons, Van Castille's men were too surprised by the shift in the fighting to take proper advantage of the Regulans' change of heart. When the Dragoons wheeled around in apparent retreat, demolishing the Fourth Hussars as they fled, both the Ninth and Sixth Militias abandoned their positions in order to defeat the Dragoons before they could escape. Instead, the Dragoons once more wheeled around and caught both Militia units in the open, demolishing both and leaving only a few companies of survivors.[3]

Colonel Van Castille continued to command the Ninth Militia following the Revolt and was stationed on Carbonis in 3025.[4]
