Staff Sergeant is a noncommissioned officer rank used by the Lyran Alliance Armed Forces and the Free Worlds League Military. Depending on the military they serve, a Staff Sergeant has different responsibilities.
Lyran Commonwealth and Lyran Alliance
After five years of service in the LAAF, a soldier has a decent chance of becoming a Staff Sergeant. These NCOs command infantry and vehicle platoons.[1] An LAAF Staff Sergeant wears a blue spearpoint with a gold bar over it to show their rank.

Free Worlds League
In the FWLM, Staff Sergeant is the official rank of many MechWarriors. In other formations like infantry or armor companies, a Staff Sergeant is usually the senior enlisted assistant to the company or platoon commander. In the FWLM Navy, this rank is known as Chief Petty Officer.[2]
The rank insignia for both ranks is a set of three gold chevrons with their tops filled with purple.
