Major Benjamin Schwartzkopf was an officer in Wolf's Dragoons, who served as the commander of Able Battalion ("The Landsknechts") of Delta Regiment from at least 3020 until 3028.[1]

History[edit]

A member of Able Battalion for nearly twenty years as of 3028, Schwartzkopf was reputed to be a vital and intelligent man, with a firm and decisive command style.

In Spring 3020, Wolf's Dragoons entered the Lyran Commonwealth's service, in part due to their impressive performance on Hesperus II. Colonel Sarah Weisz elected to retire as commander of Delta Regiment, much to the disappointment of her troops. At her suggestion, Major Kathleen Dumont was chosen to succeed her. This was however viewed with disapproval by Delta's rank and file, many of whom favored Schwartzkopf for the command.[2]

Schwartzkopf however remained in his position as commanding officer of Able Battalion until 3028, when they participated in the Battle of Misery.[1] Surviving the crucible of Misery, he led the surviving elements of his battalion through the Battle of Wapakoneta as Delta Regiment's First Provisional Company.

On Wapakoneta, Schwartzkopf was part of the ad hoc "Orange Fire" group during the defense of the city of Hannibal, ambushing with his company a Galedon Regulars battalion, using position, experience and surprise to his advantage. Unfortunately, the rest of the Dragoons were unable to reinforce Schwartzkopf as he had hoped, resulting in the deaths of Schwartzkopf and most of his outnumbered company.[3]

At the time of his death, Schwartzkopf was over sixty years old, and had three grandchildren serving with the Dragoons. He had refused to retire despite his age, having an attitude reflecting his possible Clan origins as an early Dragoon, stating that he'd rather die in battle instead of "wasting away in a hospital bed somewhere."[1]

BattleMech[edit]

Benjamin Schwartzkopf was known to pilot a Marauder BattleMech.[1]
