The Wreckoning is a short story by Russell Zimmerman that was published in the thirteenth issue of Shrapnel.

Plot Summary[edit]

On Solaris, MechWarrior Do-Hyun "Dangerous Danny" Adeoye fights in an arena match against an Archer, and is soundly defeated after running out of ammunition. He blames the technician for his defeat, and orders her to reconfigure the Merlin, to allow him to fight in a different style. Despite the reconfiguration, he loses the next fight, for which he again blames the technician.

The following argument is interrupted by Brandon O'Leary, CEO of Mountain Wolf BattleMechs, who provided the staple with the Merlin for free, to advertise Mountain Wolf's signature 'Mech. However, due to Adeoye's repeated defeats this strategy does not bear fruits yet. Instead of blaming the MechWarrior, O'Leary blames himself, and offers Adeoye a final chance. He shall participate in and win the event called "The Wreckoning", a free-for-all fight.

The stakes are high for O'Leary, who has bet his company's survival on the outcome of the fight. After a long and intense preparation in their Merlins, "Dangerous Danny" and Cassandra Fox, O'Leary's confidant, enter "The Wreckoning" to fight against a horde of 8 light 'Mechs, all either Locust, Stinger, or Wasp variants. By focussing on tactics that favor the Merlin's capabilities, they are victorious this time.

Following the fight, Adeoye decides to end his arena career and join Mountain Wolf Security instead.
