The Wreckoning is a short story by Russell Zimmerman that was published in the thirteenth issue of Shrapnel.
Plot summary[edit]
On Solaris, the MechWarrior Dangerous Danny fought in an arena against an Archer, being defeated soundly after getting out of ammo. Later, he blames his personal' 'Tech, and orders her to reconfigure his Merlin to fight in another style... but he was defeated again. Seeing his gladiator's career vanishing, he blamed his tech again, but their discussion was interrupted by the arrival of Brandon O'Leary, the CEO of Mountain Wolf BattleMechs. He had given a free Merlin to Danny's stable, to advertise his signature's 'Mech, but with Danny's defeats, he was ruining his plan. However, far from blame Danny, he blames himself, and offers the gladiator a last chance to win, in The Wreckoning, a free-for-all fight. Brandon bets his own company's survival on the fight, and after a long training, Danny and Cassandra Fox, O'Leary's right hand, fought against a horde of smaller 'mechs. This time, both Merlins won a total victory. Danny, after the fight, put an end to his gladiator's career and signs to work for Mountain Wolf, finally having become a champion.
