Colonel Anton Rand took over after Elson's Challenge and soon rebuilt Beta Regiment into an elite formation. Although very young to command an elite, reinforced regiment, Rand brought an aggressive, improvisational style that proved popular with his troops, reminding them of former commanding officer Andrei Shostokovitch from decades before.[citation needed]
