History[edit]

Constructed by the Terran Hegemony prior to or during the Age of War, the WarShip Kiev was a battlecruiser in service with the Hegemony Armed Forces. In 2475, Captain-General Carlos Marik began planning to use an invasion force assembled in the Oriente system to attack the Terran Hegemony.[1] The fleet had been assembled with the intention of attacking the Capellan Confederation for refusing to join with the League for a joint attack on the Hegemony,[2] but following Marik's ascension to the post of Captain-General and abrupt change in plans for the fleet, an aide within the League leaked the plans for the invasion to a Hegemony spy.[1]

Director-General Theodore Cameron, the ruler of the Hegemony, had already been monitoring the buildup of forces in the Oriente system, and on receiving word that Marik intended to attack the Hegemony, Cameron ordered a preemptive strike on the League fleet. Cameron led the Hegemony fleet into action personally, commanding the Hegemony forces from the Kiev. Cameron's attack caught the League forces completely by surprise, and the HAF fleet destroyed the League forces.[3][4]

Notes[edit]

  • The description of the Kiev as a "battlecruiser" may be an anachronism, as the only battlecruiser in service with the HAF at the time of the attack was the Black Lion I, one of the oldest WarShip designs. With at least three classes of battleship in service, including the newly-introduced Farragut, it may be that the Kiev's class has been misreported; alternatively, the deployment of the Kiev as flagship may have been a call back to Director-General James McKenna's preference for commanding operations from his battlecruiser Black Lion.
  • It is unclear if the Kiev which Theodore used in action at Oriente is the same ship that would later win the 2720 Martial Olympiad (see SLS Kiev).[5]
