Project SUNLIGHT was a joint ComStar-Republic of the Sphere investigation project focused around HPGs founded by Tucker Harwell.

History

After the Gray Monday, almost all the HPG generators, than allow faster-than-light communications, were burned by a virus, or destroyed by direct attacks. Only some of them, older than others, survived. Almost all the Inner Sphere fall to the chaos and wars erupted everywhere. The last ones operatives became priority targets for all the warring factions. ComStar attempts to repair or rebuild the HPG failed: any one's core was burned barely seconds after being turn on. In 3135, some hope appeared, when the technician Tucker Harwell managed to reactivate successfully Wyatt's HPG.[1]

However, a second repair on Millungera didn't last. There were so many factions wanting to reactivate the HPGs that Tucker's success made him a target for Republic forces, Spirit Cats, Bannson's Raiders and the reborn ComGuards, who finally take his men with them. However, Harwell failed to repeat Wyatt's success.

The Republic created Sunlight to uncover the reason of the blackout and reactivate the HPGs. They focused their work on Northwind, because their HPG, older than others, initially gone dark, but later inexplicably begin transmitting again.[2]

That made that planet a target, and around the HPG complex a three sides, between Northwind Highlanders, Draconis Combine and Capellan Confederation, forcing the defenders to blow the HPG to drive both invaders offworld. However, they keep the underground part of it intact, and still critical to Sunlight's research.[3]

Notes

The virus that shut down the HPG appears to be Clarion Note, a Devlin Stone secret project, but he says he hasn't initiated it.[4]
