Description

The WSP-2A Super Wasp is an evolution of the classic Wasp, a re-design that essentially produced a new BattleMech with even a different tonnage (similar to the -IIC variants that the Clans created for many classic designs). Its weight was increased to 25 tons, allowing for the addition of another ton of armor and the installation of a substantially larger fusion engine that significantly improves the design's ground speed to match famously fast 'Mechs such as the Locust, Spider or Cicada. The jump capacity was not improved, however.

Note that the Super Wasp as described in the sourcebook is an illegal design, as it would be one ton overweight if built under standard rules. This probably occurred because Tales of the Black Widow Company was published not long after Battledroids, and in that book both the Wasp and Stinger had one ton too much armor. When the Super Wasp was designed the tonnage was adjusted for the new engine, jump jets, internal structure, and gyro with the rest added to the armor the Wasp already had. Since the Wasp was one ton overweight, the Super Wasp ended up one ton overweight as well.

Together with the Super Griffin, the Super Wasp was designed at the Friden Aerospace Park research facility on Hoff by House Davion scientists in "Project Phoenix". After eighteen months of work, two operational prototypes had been completed when the Black Widow Company attacked the facility on 13 May 3022. Both were deployed as a last line of defense together with the single prototype Super Griffin, and all were presumably destroyed. There have been no recorded encounters with either design afterwards.

The Super Wasp was never put into production after the apparent destruction of the prototypes, but the exact reasons for this remain unknown. A few years later, the Hatchetman was hailed as the first new 'Mech design built in centuries, indicating that the Super Wasp project had been abandoned for good. (It should be noted that the the statement indicating the Hatchetman to be the first new 'Mech is inaccurate: The Capellan Confederation had been designing the all-new Raven and Cataphract at around the same time and the Merlin had debuted in 3010 already, albeit in the periphery.)

Armament

The Super Wasp remains faithful to the weapon configuration of the regular WSP-1A Wasp, namely a Medium Laser in the right arm and an SRM-2 launcher in the left leg.

Variants

None known. Although functional prototypes were built, the Super Wasp never advanced beyond the prototype stage.
