Origins[edit]
The Davion family was wealthy and powerful, gaining notoriety on New Avalon as owners of Avalon Ventures by the twenty-third century. Following the election of Lucien Davion as Prime Minister of New Avalon in 2309,[2][3][4] Lucien expanded the world's economic, political, and military influence, culminating in the formation of the Crucis Pact in 2317. The mutual defense league encompassed 20 nearby systems at its beginning. Lucien's retirement in 2332 was followed by the election of his son, Reynard, to the position, following the changing of the title to the President of the Federated Suns. Reynard died in 2371, and the Council of Ministers named each of his children in quick succession, including Etien Davion[2] and Marie Davion to succeed him, and solidifying the hereditary succession of the leadership of the nation. In 2417, Simon Davion renamed the Premiership, becoming the first Prince of the Federated Suns.[5]
The Federated Suns, and the power of the Davions, was consolidated during the Age of War and by 2550 the nation was firmly the fiefdom of the House of Davion. In 2572, the Federated Suns joined the Star League, and enjoyed the Golden Age of Humanity. Under the so-called Kerensky Protectorate, John Davion was one of the most powerful High Council Lords and opposed the centralization of power under Richard Cameron. John took the Federated Suns out of the Star League with the conclusion of the Star League Civil War, and prepared the nation for a long-protracted war. He nominated himself as the new First Lord, recruited Star League Defense Force units to his service, and expanded war matériel production, as did every other Successor Lord.[5]
The opening of the First Succession War saw Paul Davion name himself Duke of New Avalon, up until that point a title held by House Cameron.[6] He was the first Successor Warlord that offered widespread titles of nobility in exchange for troops, further strengthening the rise of feudalism in the Inner Sphere. The over two centuries of warfare in the Succession Wars further weakened the Davion's hold on many worlds, in addition to the widespread destruction of industry and prosperity that occurred across the Inner Sphere,[5] but by the thirty-first century, House Davion was among the strongest of the remaining House Lords.
