Description
Designed during the early years of the Golden Century, the Wakazashi (the sister sword of the katana used only in desperation or to commit seppuku) allowed Clan Jade Falcon the time to rebuild their then weakened Touman.
Finding itself in increasingly dire straits due to the damage from the internal divisons between their Warrior and Lower Castes during the late 2900's, then Khan Lisa Buhallin ordered her scientists to create a heavily armed and armored 'Mech that could provide the Falcons with the breathing room they needed rebuild. Never intended as a long-term production design, while the durable Wakazashi was relatively easy to build, it was difficult to repair or modify and its reputation suffered greatly with the appearance of the OmniMech. When the Falcon's fortunes improved, production was shut down in the early 30th century in favor of other designs, with only a few scattered examples surviving until time of the Great Refusal.[1] [2]
Though the Wakazashi used an Endo Steel chassis, that was the only extravagant construction element in the design. Powered by a standard fusion engine, though it's top speed is comparable to an Atlas, the Wakazashi's sixteen and half tons of armor allowed it to hang in a fight for a long time. Three Jump Jets allowed the Wakazashi to cover broken terrain, while fourteen double heat sinks gave it reasonable endurance in the field.[2]
Armament
The Wakazashi used a SLDF Model 22-99-b Gauss Rifle and Talon 5 ER PPC to provide long range firepower. An opponent who closed with the Wakazashi hoping to get under the minimum range of these weapons was in for a rude shock: A massive Flocculation LB 20-X autocannon backed up by a pair of Series 7J ER Medium Lasers. With three tons of ammunition for the Gauss Rifle and Autocannon, the Wakazashi was able to inflict large amounts of damage on a multitude of enemy forces. [2]
Variants
Notorious for the difficulties in fixing it, the Wakazashi chassis didn't lend itself to modifications. No official variants are known to exist.
Notes
The fluff text for the design says it uses Ferro-Fibrous Armor, but the record sheet doesn't dedicate any critical spaces to armor and the number of armor points on the 'Mech is equal to tonnage times standard armor point count. [2] [3]
