Description[edit]

The Atreus-class battleship was designed at the very end of the Age of War, just before the formation of the Star League. As a testament to the naval prowess of the Free Worlds League, and its economic prosperity, the Atreus was just as good (if not better) than contemporary rival vessels fielded by the Lyran Commonwealth, the Capellan Confederation, and the Terran Hegemony.[2]

The Atreus-class would form the backbone of every FWLM naval group after its introduction. Though the league ceased production in 2681, two-thirds of all Atreus-class vessels constructed had survived to the beginning of the Succession Wars; only against the Magistracy of Canopus during the Reunification War had the Atreus faced any real threat.[2] In 2765 at least twenty of the venerable battleships were still in service, with four active in each of the Free Worlds League Navy's five fleets.[3] Thanks to the Atreus the fleets of the Free Worlds League were able to make impressive gains against the Lyran Commonwealth and especially against the Capellan Confederation. These gains slowed after the eventual demise of the class during the First Succession War; the last Atreus-class vessel was destroyed by Lyran aerospace fighters in 2809.[2]

Armament[edit]

The Atreus-class is poorly armed and moderately armored compared with later battleships. The class only mounts 1,738 tons of Ferro-Aluminum Armor, and provides less than 60% of the protection of a Nightlord-class battleship. However, against contemporary foes, the Atreus was more agile and better armed and armored.[2]

The Atreus has weaponry capable of engaging capital-scale craft as well as small aerospace assets, with a mix of naval PPCs, naval autocannons, naval lasers, and small and large lasers. The greatest weakness of the Atreus's armament is its ammunition-dependence. With only 10 rounds for each naval autocannon, the Atreus must win its engagements quickly.[2]

Combined with the class's DropShip capacity and fighter complement, the Atreus-class is capable of standing up to any attacker. The only question is the outcome of the engagement.[2]

Cargo[edit]

Never intended as a cargo vessel, the Atreus-class has some cargo capacity, but decidedly less than other, smaller vessels. The class possesses 2 DropShip rings, and has two bays. Bay 1 is intended to transport aerospace fighters, of which it can ferry 4 squadrons. Bay 2 is the dedicated cargo bay, capable of handling up to 166,635 tons of cargo.[2]
