-From The Remembrance (Clan Wolf in Exile) Passage 411, Verse 16, Lines 1-4[1]

Clan Wolf-in-Exile is a splinter faction of the original Clan Wolf, one of the twenty Clans created by Nicholas Kerensky. Born from the destruction of the original Clan Wolf in the Refusal War, the Wolves-in-Exile continued to uphold the Warden traditions of their forebears under the leadership of Khan Phelan Kell by siding with the Inner Sphere. Despite being Abjured by the other Clans and considered bandits by them, the Exiles continue to maintain their claim to the Wolf name and uphold their interpretation of the Clan way of life.

History

The Refusal War

The groundwork for the survival of Clan Wolf was laid by ilKhan Ulric Kerensky years prior to the Refusal War when he sent portions of various sibkos from the Clan homeworlds to the Inner Sphere.[2] On the eve of the war itself the ilKhan held council with the two Wolf Khans, Khan Natasha Kerensky and saKhan Phelan Ward, where he revealed his plan. In order to ensure the continuity of Clan Wolf, Phelan was ordered to take a majority of the Clan's Warden faction, along with genetic legacies and a third of the Clan's equipment, and find a safe haven in the Inner Sphere. Meanwhile Ulric and Natasha would lead the rest of their forces against Clan Jade Falcon and attempt a twofold victory: first by destroying the one Crusader Clan strong enough and best positioned to continue the Clan invasion, second by destroying those Crusader elements within Clan Wolf itself which sought to break the Truce of Tukayyid. If in the course of the war Clan Wolf was destroyed, Phelan and the survivors were to rebuild the Clan and uphold it's traditions.[3][4]

Phelan at first objected to this plan, wishing to stand beside Ulric and Natasha, but finally relented. His forces would take part in early battles to give the impression that all of Clan Wolf was taking part in the Trial before making their way to Arc-Royal, homeworld of the Kell Hounds and Phelan's family.[3] On the eve of the Trial, by the authority of his office Ulric commissioned the creation of a new Bloodname, Kell, and in a postdated message bestowed it upon Phelan. Armed with a Bloodname which could not be stripped through Abjuration, saKhan Phelan Kell and the rest of his forces were given the final charge, to stand beside the Inner Sphere and protect it from any further Clan aggression.[4]

Phelan Kell and Delta Galaxy performed the first part of the deception by attacking Jade Falcon forces garrisoning Sudeten on 27 September 3057. After an impressive victory which netted over a hundred Falcon 'Mechs captured and returning to the Wolf fleet, he tried one last time to convince Natasha to include his forces in further combats and was again denied. On 5 October Phelan Kell and the Warden Wolves began their trek towards Arc-Royal, carrying the complete genetic heritage of Clan Wolf aboard Phelan's flagship Werewolf.[5] They followed the same path as Natasha's forces, traveling to Baker 3 before diverting to Graus and then Morges.[6]

On Morges the Wolves regrouped with the Kell Hounds, however hot on their heels were the Jade Falcons. Omicron and Peregrine Galaxies arrived in the system on 5 December hoping to wipe out the last functioning remnants of Clan Wolf. They brought news with them of the death of both Natasha and Ulric, but rather than demoralize the Wolves it only inspired them to honor their memory. On 13 December the Jade Falcons made planet-fall with their entire force and the battle would rage across the snowy planet until 25 December, when the last Jade Falcon unit was destroyed and the Refusal War ended.[7]

Jihad

Following the Word of Blake attack on the Wolf's Dragoons on Outreach in 3067, the subsequent orbital and nuclear bombardment of the planet and the forced retreat of the surviving elements of the Dragoons and their allies, Clan Wolf-in-Exile launched a mission to rescue elements of the Dragoons believed to still be alive. The task force launched on the 20th of March 3068, and would defy heavy Word of Blake resistance to successfully recover scores of civilians and more than two dozen Dragoons.[8] Clan Wolf-in-Exile supported the allied coalition assembled by Devlin Stone during the Jihad. This support would cost the Wolves; in one instance faulty intelligence on the Chara system resulted in the Wolf forces tasked with liberating the Word-controlled system in September 3077 being savaged at the hands of the defending Blakists, while three allied WarShips were lost to the system's active SDS network.[9]

Culture

Clan Wolf-in-Exile maintains many of the same traditions as the original Clan Wolf. This includes a more open and egalitarian version of Clan society, strong inter-caste relations and a lack of rigid formality. Their interaction with the other Clans, and with the reborn Clan Wolf in particular, are more strained.

Military

The Sixth Jaguar Dragoons, captured nearly intact, have added significant strength to the Wolf-in-Exile Touman. With the Sixth, Alpha Galaxy is near full strength, but the Epsilon Garrison Galaxy remains the most understrength, numbering only three Clusters, as opposed to five Clusters prior to the Battle of Tukayyid.

The first of the Wolf-in-Exiles' new BattleMech designs entered service in 3060, and trade agreements with the Kell Hounds have netted much needed equipment. Further more, Wolf scientists and technicians working with the Kell Hounds have created a new OmniMech, which is so versatile, some Wolf garrison warriors have traded their BattleMechs for it.

Action against Clan Ghost Bear in late 3060 have gained badly needed material for rebuilding the Clan, especially with the capture of an 'ark', a new Leviathan-class WarShip carrying prefabricated buildings and equipment for factory building complexes. However, in the course of capturing this 'ark,' Star Captain Ragnar was captured by the Third Bear Guard.

Given sufficient time, the Wolf Clan can easily accomplish the daunting but necessary task of rebuilding both their society and their military. Unfortunately, the Crusader Clans are unlikely to let too much time go by before pressing their own objectives. The clock is running, and time is against the Wolf Clan. The breaking of the Truce may occur any day, and then all the invading Clans will once again swarm into the Inner Sphere. The exiles of Clan Wolf must somehow be ready to meet the challenge; otherwise, the Crusaders will destroy not only the Inner Sphere, but the true heart of Clan Wolf as well.
