Description
The Gorgon is a heavy fire support unit that often anchors ProtoMech Points. Second only to the heavy Minotaur in armor protection, the Gorgon can stay in a fight until it has exhausted all its ammunition. The ProtoMech "main gun" was developed for the Gorgon. Since the LRM launcher couldn't fit into the torso of the ProtoMech, Clan Smoke Jaguar engineers created a system that contained the weapon in an external unit (the main gun). The main gun attaches to the Gorgon's torso in a special socket, and is supported by the arms.
Armament
With a standard LRM-10 launcher and a ton of ammunition, the Gorgon can provide almost as much firepower as a Valkyrie. For close in work, the Gorgon mounts an ER Micro Laser. Though the laser can't reach out to the LRM minimum range, it can still worry any unit that gets too close. Usually a pilot will use this weapon to deter pursuit when heading back to reload the LRM launcher.
Variants
- Gorgon 2 - Developed in the 3060s, this variant is designed for close-quarters combat. The long-range weaponry is dropped, for additional armor, Jump Jets, and a Medium Pulse Laser. BV (2.0) = 308[4]
- Gorgon 3 - This variant is utilizes short-range missiles, in place its laser weaponry. Its is give a torso mounted SRM 4 Launcher with ton of ammunition. The variant has increases of its armor protection and engine upgraded to move the ProtoMech to maximum 80 km/ph.[5]
- Gorgon 4 - A Jihad era variant, this model utilizes an torso mounted AP Gauss Rifle with 2 tons of ammunition. In its torso, its been fitted with a SRM 6 Launcher with a ton of ammunition. The Gorgon 4 been given half-set of Jump Jets and re-arrangement of it protection. BV (2.0) = 289[6]
