Description

Created by the wealthy citizens of Doneval II in Federated Suns, the Grommet was a Succession Wars Era heavy-class IndustrialMech which was refitted as secondary combat unit.

History

Locally produced in effort to bolstered planetary's defense, wealthy local farmers funded the reworking of the design into what became known as a MilitiaMech. The Grommet was designed to contribute to the common defense of a otherwise defenseless world in the Federated Suns. Unusual in design when compared to other IndustrialMechs conversions for military use. The Grommet was built with fusion of high quality military and civilian equipment allowing it survive combat longer than other MODs which would follow it.[3]

Invasion of Doneval II during War of 3039

The designed was put to the test in September of 3039, when planet was invaded by the Draconis Combine's during the War of 3039. The first battalion of the Ryuken-go landed planet and expected easy victory over the reported defense planet. The Combine battalion was forced prolong campaign, where to find the vehicle militia was decentralized and was not easily knocked out by raids to any centralized location. To their surprise, the make-shift Doneval Miltia's bolstering vehicle companies and total two battalions of D90 Grommet MilitiaMechs with vehicle formations arrived at their captured mining base after weeks of spare fighting on planet. The Grommet numbers were decimated in the battle with the Kuritas, few would survive with some independent hover vehicle companies. These few surviving Grommets and Militia's other assets would conduct guerrilla raids until Davion reinforcements would arrive in late October. [4][5]

Weapons and Equipment

The Grommet was originally a industrialmech which was up gunned for the Militia. While its now armed, it still carries on with it's original tasks as an ArgoMech. Heart of the design (which is a rare for industrialMech during the Succession Wars period) is it's Fusion Reactor which this allows the design move upwards to 54 kilometers hour. The reactor also allows it to support it's other capacities which are unique to this hybrid of IndustrialMech and BattleMech. On it's hull, the design carries an respectable amount of armor almost equaling protection found on lighter Heavy BattleMechs such as the Ostroc and RFL-3C Rifleman.

The Grommet's main military grade weaponry which includes; A Large Laser and Vehicle Flamer found in the 'Mech's left arm. A Class-5 Autocannon mounted in right arm, with ammunition placed in adjason side torso.

While it's ArgoMech equipment is not intended for combat, they can still be used for those purposes. To help manage the heat of the weapons and other systems, the Grommet is fitted with 11 heat sinks with two of them found below the engine.

While the Vehicle Flamer and its 60 rounds of fuel can cause infantry and Mech alike harm. So does the AgroMech's grain harvesting Combine, which can be utilized in a grizzly manner against infantry as well. The Grommet's close range military weaponry are limited, however it's all purpose right arm mounted Chainsaw can be used fend off attackers entering melee range. While being used for it's original role, retains a 4-ton cargo bay in the left torso and a Dumper. The Dumper is mounted in the front of the 'Mech help relay debris it maybe used to dig.[6][7]

Note

The Grommet was a pictured, but unnamed unit while mentioned in Historical: War of 3039. It would not be named until revised version of Technical Readout: Vehicle Annex was released. It's stats would be later be revealed in 2014's Record Sheets: Vehicle Annex, Industrial Mechs and Exoskeletons. Prior to this, it was not clear what this looked like or its connection with the War of 3039.

As of this writing, the Master Unit List only lists the Grommet with no Battle Value or introduction date.
