Description[edit]

One of the first ultralight BattleMechs ever built, the Junior was designed by the Federated Suns in the twenty-fifth century and remains in use with backwater garrisons, third-line units, and some mercenary units. It has been in and out of production for centuries; its original manufacturer sold out to Federated, who then made arrangements with Corean Enterprises. As of 3025 the Junior is built in a small factory on Quentin, with production hampered by raids from House Kurita.

Weapons and Equipment[edit]

The Junior remains among the best-armed 'Mechs in its weight class, sporting a reliable combination of a Sutel IX medium laser in the center torso and a ChisComp 32 small laser in each side torso. Two tons of armor provides minimal protection.

Variants[edit]

None known.

Canonicity[edit]

The Junior was only ever described in StarDrive. Since this magazine is not currently counted among the canonical sources for BattleTech, the 'Mech itself is not currently considered canonical either.

Notes[edit]

  • The maximum ground speed given for this 'Mech is slightly higher than normal for its mass and engine rating (69.9 instead of 64.8 km/h), but this had no impact on its game stats at the time of publication.
  • The Junior features a Shure-Shott CL-541/9 targeting and tracking system, with advanced built-in redundancies and self-diagnostics, allowing the 'Mech to suffer only a +1 penalty instead of +2 to its to-hit numbers after suffering the first critical hit to its sensors. This system can only be used on 'Mechs with no more than three weapons, however.
  • A quirk in the fusion override circuit causes a tendency in the Junior to shut down unexpectedly under water (requiring a shutdown avoidance roll depending on water depth each turn), though it can be restarted normally.
  • This apocryphal 'Mech was published before there were any rules for Design Quirks, but much like the other designs in StarDrive, some of their unique features (and bugs) can be recreated as design quirks.
