History[edit]

As of early 3059, the Sparta was due to be the fourth Zechetinu-class corvette to be launched by the Free Worlds League and was undergoing somewhat problematic trials in the Simpson Desert system. Manufactured at the Illium Naval Yard in the Ionus system, the Sparta had encountered a number of problems during her shakedown trials; Captain Ahmed Pervez, a very senior naval engineer, was the officer responsible for taking the Sparta through her trials, and the engineering staff aboard became concerned about indications of overstress found on a number of major bulkheads. As a result it was considered very likely that the Sparta would return to the shipyards at Ionus for further work before entering active service as the FWLS Sparta under the command of Captain Roberto Gheorghiu.[1]

By 3067, the Sparta had been in service for the better part of a decade and was one of four corvettes of her class and manufacturing block known to be on active service, serving alongside the FWLS Attica, FWLS Karelia, and FWLS Tirana.[2] The Sparta was involved in a pitched naval battle in the Atreus system on the 25th of October 3068, where loyalist and Blakist elements of the Free Worlds League navy turned on each other. The Blakists had suborned a significant number of WarShips within the Free Worlds League navy, and those Blakist-affiliated ships in the Atreus system at the time—the Aegis-class heavy cruiser FWLS Nueva Badajoz, the Thera-class carrier FWLS Corinth and one of her escorts, the Eagle-class frigate FWLS Mordred, the Black Lion-class battlecruiser FWLS Xanthos, the Agamemnon-class heavy cruiser FWLS Aeneas and the Impavido-class FWLS Impavido—attacked the League loyalist WarShips present in the system at the time.[3]

The loyalist WarShips in the system were mainly lighter destroyers and corvettes, and which consisted of the Sparta, the Eagle-class FWLS Gawain, the Impavido-class FWLS Janos Marik, the Zechetinu II-class corvettes FWLS Acari and FWLS Scorpion and the Essex-class destroyer FWLS Raven. The naval battle was a victory for the Blakist forces; none of the Blakist WarShips were destroyed, although all of them had suffered damage, but of the loyalist forces, only the FWLS Acari and FWLS Raven escaped to seek refuge in the Duchy of Oriente.[3]
