Plot Summary[edit]

On 8 August 3132, Kitsune Kurita, a Knight of the Republic of the Sphere, receives troubling news while being in the Strategic Command Center on Terra. The message, delivered via fax from Sheratan, reports increasing unrest among the resident Wolves following a sudden communication blackout caused by the failure of their hyperpulse generator. The news confirms Kitsune's growing concern that the crisis may threaten the Republic of the Sphere's stability.

Returning to the situation room, Kitsune briefs a group of fellow knights on the spreading failures of HPGs across the Republic and the wider Inner Sphere. A holomap shows that a majority of the Republic's HPG network is affected, with only a small number of stations still operational. Kitsune explains the significance of the HPG network, its historical importance, and how the failures appear to be widespread and non-centralized. He then reports that some HPGs have even being attacked directly by unknown forces.

During the discussion of the implications, Paladin Exemplar of the Republic Victor Steiner-Davion—Kitsune's father—arrives unexpectedly and assumes command of the meeting. Victor informs the group that the Council of Paladins has assigned responsibilities for various aspects of the crisis. Victor is tasked with finding out who is behind the blackout and the knights present will form his team to investigate the cause of the HPG failures and prepare for any further developments. When asked about the Exarch's status, Kitsune reports that he was last known to be on Freedom and has not been heard from since the crisis began.

Victor orders the group to rest before reconvening in six hours and privately instructs Kitsune to contact Consuela Dagmar for a meeting. He also advises Kitsune to bring his wife and children back from Northwind, anticipating that the situation will deteriorate rapidly.
