MechWarrior Hap "Madman" Carsburg was a MechWarrior with the Federated Suns Thirty-third Avalon Hussars, and after being cashiered the Greenburg's Godzillas mercenary unit, in the early thirty-first century.[1][2][3]

Carsburg was reputed to be something of a con man, who had seen his share of jails. When one of his elaborate cons had been successful, he played the benevolent fool with his riches, sporting fancy hats and carrying a sword. When he inevitably runs out of money however, he becomes dark and moody, waiting for inspiration to create a new con.
On the battlefield Carsburg fought in accordance with his mood, being a team player when happy, but a loner dangerously obsessed with his personal goals when depressed.
During his career, Carsburg was both court-martialed, and awarded medals for bravery. However ultimately his erratic behavior had him put on probation, and then after the battle for Liao during the Fourth Succession War, cashiered entirely from the Thirty-third Avalon Hussars. He then turned to the mercenary life, joining the flamboyant Greenburg's Godzillas.[1][2][3]
