Colonel John Nelson was the commander of the Eighth Lyran Regulars, with the Lyran Commonwealth, from at least 3145 to 3148.[2][1]

As of 3145, Nelson was based on Abramkovo and Zdice, with the Eighth Lyran Regulars.[2]
By January 3148 however, Nelson had been placed in charge of Task Force Kingbreaker, and tasked with reinforcing Lyran forces on the Buena Collective world of Ayacucho. While Nelson his fresh troops would cause the rookie Second Collective Guards to break, the fighting was ultimately quite intense, though he was eventual able to force the surrender of the Second Collective Guards. After discovering many of the Guards had been conscripted by the separatist Buena leader Diego Widmer, Nelson received permission from Buena Province commander Martha Steiner to enlist those willing to support the Commonwealth into a new auxiliary force, which became known as the First Buena Volunteers.[3]
Once Ayacucho had been secured, Nelson proceeded to Buena, landing on 24 January. The world had recently been reinforced however, which together with Nelson's orders to minimize the killing of the Lyran's wayward compatriots, caused his initial push to capture the War College of Buena to fail. Seeking to regroup, the situation was salvaged by the cadets of the Buena Training Battalion, who switched sides as Nelson was retreating. This ended the resistance against the Archon's troops near the War College, allowing Nelson to capture Fort Buena.[1]
