Surinami Processing was a processed food maker within the Draconis Combine.[1][2]
Overview[edit]
Surinami Processing's most profitable brand was Stomach's Joy. Sold on only ten Combine worlds a year, the company used a complex population algorithm to determine which worlds would be on its sales list for the brand, with the announcement every October of the next year's planetary list a highly anticipated event across the entire Combine. Once a system was on "the list," it received massive imports of Stomach's Joy for the next sales year which continued until it fell off the list when imports ceased. While such rarity would normally make Stomach's Joy the one of the most expensive perishable goods in the Combine, Surinami discouraged overpricing by selling the product on a variable pricing structure according to a citizen's status, ensuring that the dish remained accessible for all citizens to enjoy not just the richest. Its Stomach's Joy recipe was a closely guarded secret; while outside observers had described it as having "a wretched taste and texture" according to one ComStar acolyte, those who ate a lot reported Stomach's Joy producing a feeling of well-being, almost a floating sensation, that brought people back again and again.[1][2]
After Ko was captured by the Lyran Commonwealth in the Fourth Succession War, Surinami started marketing Stomach's Joy to select Lyran markets. When unusual side effects triggered an official inquiry into the company's practices, it was discovered the product contained not only a mix of organic byproducts from their various other food products a cost-saving ploy, but also trace amounts of native-grown narcotics.[3] Public outrage and government fines spelled the end for the food-processing giant,[3] though apparently not completely, as they were back in business as of 3067.[1]
