The Tread of Doom was a Mercenary unit.

Unit Description[edit]

The Tread of Doom was a combined-arms battalion focused on tanks, but also with VTOL and swift hovercraft.[1]

History[edit]

IlClan Era[edit]

The Tread of Doom was one of the mercenary units recruited on Galatea or Kandersteg in 3151. As the old Clan Jade Falcon Occupation Zone dissolved into the Hinterlands, a new state, mainly composed by old Falcon Warriors and the Falcon Merchant Caste, was born: the Alyina Mercantile League.[2]

The AML leader, Syndic Marena, sent emissaries to both planets to hire mercenaries to protect their planets. The Tread of Doom was one of these, and was transported to the capital, Alyina.[2]

However, mercenaries weren't familiar in old Clan space, and the AML regular warriors, former Clansmen, and mercenaries, began to clash, forcing the AML to open extra military stockades... but one of the Doom members crossed the line. With the Tread stationed near New Delhi, Alyina's capital, a tank crewmember, killed a freeborn AML infantryman in a drunken scuffle. Witnesses decried the act as murder, and a tribunal found the crewman guilty, sentencing him to death. The DOOM leaders didn't accept the sentence.[2]

Derby Halloran, the Doom's leader, raised a ruckus, calling the tribunal hypocrites: for him, the Clans were supposed to respect a kill made in a fair fight — but his protests weren't considered: the AML wasn't a Clan anymore.[3]

Late on the evening of 30 October, the Doom attacked. Six heavy tanks rolled through downtown New Delhi, smashed open the jailhouse where their crewman was imprisoned. There, they liberated not only him, but also all other prisoners. The Doom's plan was to steal the contents of the Jade Repository before fleeing. There, the AML had stored all riches from VaultShip Beta, but the attacking force, composed of hovercraft and VTOL, wasn't able to pull off the heist. The AML defended the repository with ferocity. Elementals in full armor met the Tread and drove them off after a fierce firefight, crippling two hovercraft, but lost three Elementals.[2]

Defeated, the Tread searched for another target, and managed to steal a small vault, lashing through the ferrocrete and dragging the vault to a VTOL. The loot was a small sum, but large enough for the Tread, and they fled the planet.

The enraged Marena didn't bother to order a pursuit of the Tread, even considered voiding all contracts on mercenaries, but the Lone Wolves leader convinced her not to do so.[3]
