Description
Designed in last decades of the 25th Century, the Ballista Self-Propelled Artillery Tank was produced for the Terran Hegemony Armed Forces. Original designed by Rivverson Technologies of Nanking, the Ballista was considered to be a Latest word in artillery vehicles. Vehicles produced during the time were considerably heavier, slower, and carried less protection than the Ballista. The Ballista would deploy in last years of the Age of War, its innovative design would spur virtual clones being produced for various Inner Sphere and Major Periphery nations.
With the conception of the Star League, the SLDF's cobbled up forces would soon purge these clone copies for its originator due to streamline logistics headaches. The vehicle would soon become the standard SLDF mobile field artillery piece for centuries to follow, being replaced by the 28th Century with such vehicles like Sniper Artillery Vehicle & the Marksman. The vehicle would remain service (with minor updates) despite its ancient origin through the Star League Civil War and well into Succession Wars era in the service with both Inner Sphere and the Pentagon Powers of Pentagon Cluster.[2]
Armament & Capacities
Designed solely as an artillery vehicle, it is appropriately armed with a Hegemony Arms DAT/91 Sniper Artillery Cannon mounted in the turret. The vehicle carries three tons of ammunition onboard, however with its trailer hitch it would be able additional ammunition.
The Ballista's secondary weaponry would only include three KKL/h-12 Machine Guns, mount two forward and one in the rear. Powered by 165-rated Internal Combustion Engine, the vehicle is able to keep up at modest pace with other support elements and moving battlefield. Protecting the Ballista's hull is 7.5 tons of Quantum Heavy Plate, giving adequate protection against enemy fire should opposing forces manage to penetrate deeply behind friendly battle lines.[3]
Notes
The Vehicle's Armanent fluff names individual Sniper weapon as a cannon. However, this not a true Sniper Artillery Cannon, which lighter and short-ranged than a regular Sniper Artillery Piece. Ballista's record sheet & weapon break down shows that Sniper listed is regular Artillery Piece version.[4]
