Overview

The Cassie DeBurke Institute for Hyperspatial Studies is a Republic of the Sphere academic institution on the planet Terra, located in the city of Sydney.[1]

The institution was named after Cassie DeBurke, the lead scientist on the project that built the first HPG station in 2629 just outside the Court of the Star League, which transmitted the first HPG message from Terra to New Earth on New Year's Day 2630.[1]

ComStar Precentor Malcolm Buhl in his role of Director of Special Projects set up the college, whose goal was to restore the HPG net in the wake of Gray Monday, selecting Carole Ackerman to head the Institute.[1]

One of Institute's most famous students would be Tucker Harwell, who devised a viable means of restarting an HPG, and was then dispatched to test his theories on the HPG on Wyatt, succeeding on that task. Following Tucker's disappearance, hopes in Harwell's solution to be more widely applied proved abortive as it only worked on Wyatt, forcing the remaining DeBurke team under Carole Ackerman to start again from scratch. Any progress the Cassie DeBurke Institute for Hyperspatial Studies made was unknown by the enactment of Fortress Republic.[2]
