Hidechi Welles was a MechWarrior from the Republic of the Sphere that sided with the Dragon's Fury during the Dark Age.

History[edit]

Born from a combination of Federated Suns and Rasalhagian ancestry, Hidechi Welles was a Republic of the Sphere citizen that finally sided with Katana Tormark.[1]

Welles was assigned along his unit to capture the vital spaceport city of Lindon's Folly on Gehenna Isle, on the planet Styx.[2] Along with one of his lancemates piloting a Centurion, he came across two Republic of the Sphere Mechs, a Wasp and a Panther, and though his subordinate in the Centurion wanted to kill both, Welles did not allow this and instead bowed in a salute, which was returned by the Panther pilot (Charisse Perry). He then allowed both of the opposing 'Mechs to leave unharmed.[3]

By the 18th, his forces again pushed the RAF defensive line. A full company of 'Mechs and tanks, plus maybe another company of supporting foot troopers—armored and otherwise—suddenly converged on the RAF positions. This time along a Cougar, he found the same Panther trying to escape in a fighting withdrawal, and though she was able to cripple a couple DCMS hovers and drive back some Drac Toads, she only survived when Welles again allowed her to escape. For the rest of the battle he fought the RAF forces with ardor, even taking a fair chunk out of Lieutenant McCabe's Legionnaire.[4]

On the 25th of October his full lance composed of his Ghost, the Cougar and two Centurions found the same Panther alone, and again he allowed the 'Mech to retreat.[2]

He wrote a haiku

Lone Ghost stalks Panther.
Three times a kindred life spared.
Ronin awaits word.
  — DFRonin7

, which clearly describes his encounters with the Panther in a secure chat to locate them.[5]

By the 15 November 3135, the two pilots found each other in a secure chat, where he explained to Perry that he considered himself a Samurai, and that bushido ordered him to fight only even battles not against inferior foes.[6]

Unbeknownst to him, the ISF was investigating his behavior as a warrior, similar to what he was also doing with the other five MechWarriors coming from Katana's Dragon's Fury.[3]

BattleMechs[edit]

He piloted a Ghost.[3]
