Redemption and Malice is a short story by Blaine Lee Pardoe. It was properly released by CGL in PDF format through a download link that was emailed out to backers of the 2019 Clan Invasion crowdfunding campaign from 28 February 2020 onwards; due to an oversight some people were able to purchase it early when the story was briefly available as a digital product on the CGL webstore on 6 February.

The story mentioned two previously unknown BattleMech designs and introduced the borrack, an alien riding beast. It also mentioned "The Clave" and, through the reveal of the main protagonist's full name at the end, suggests it to be a remnant of Clan Wolverine.

Plot summary

The 6 November 3148, nearby the city of Kensington, on planet Dichell, Halloran and Ansel, two salvagers, receive the visit of their neighbor Yurki King. They had just salvaged an arm of an old BattleMech, and King explains them the arrival of a pirate band on planet, taking slaves. Hallis simpathized with him, bud pointed than they weren't warriors. However, King said he recognized both wounds and behavior as the typical of MechWarriors, and than the pirates will attack them too, and ask them to protect the planet's defenseless people. After King left, Halloran and Ansel decided to go to the nearby town to make some exploration. Four days later, both entered Kensington. After seeing a pirate Galleon tank, they entered into the bar where it was parked, and found some pirates terrorizing the people. Halloran attempted to drink something, but when the pirate leader attacked him, a fight ensued. Halloran easily shoot the pirate's foot, and both disarmed and captured the rest of them, leaving them free, but taking their tank and weapons. Three days later, the pirate gang, Sarah's Slammers arrived in front of Hallis and Ansel's house. With some locals' help, both junkers had fortified their complex and were ready to defend it. The pirate leader, Sarah, negotiated with Halloran face-to-face, offering him a place into his gang if they join them, and threatened to kill them all if not. Halloran rejected her offer, and in exchange offered her the chance to leave the planet after freeing all their slaves. She rejected his offer, and both sides prepared to battle. A fierce battle ensued, and the junkers managed to down two of the pirates 'three 'Mechs. Sarah dies, and the rest of his gang surrendered. Six days later, after the pirate DropShip had been assaulted and all the slaves freed, King thanks Halloran for his help, but was surprised to hear than Halloran and Ansel, for having exposed themselves, had to abandon Dichell and rejoin their people. King point than they will be left defenseless, but Halloran said him they will gave them a BattleMech and two tanks to protect his people. When Yurki saids he didn't knew even Halloran's full name, hthe junker saids that's true, and didn't tell him than his name was Halloran Hallis.
