Description
Created for the Star League Defense Force in 2680 as part of need for mobile fire support. The SLDF's Quartermaster Command was responsible for choicing this design due to its excellent armor protection & its advance CASE protection system. Which allows the crew & vehicle to survive ammunition explosion, the QC felt it worth the cost. The vehicle was critized initially for being limited due to its Wheeled configuration.
History
Star League & Succession War Eras
In 2735, Brooks Incorporated created a cheap knock-off of the Thor, named Thumper.[1] These vehicles were also deployed by SLDF and Succession States armies. The vehicle proved its worth during the Amaris Coup. The Ulston Armor of Terra which was primary builder of the Thor, was destroyed in 2777. The war reduced the vehicles numbers, many leaving with Kerensky's Exodus Fleet. The remaining vehicles in the Inner Sphere were thought to be completely wiped out by the end Second Succession War.
Clan Invasion Era
Many of the Thors that part of Operation Exodus became part of the Clan 2nd-line military units and were enhanced advance Clan technology.
Comstar had many of the vehicles stored on Terra's vast storage facilities, until Battle of Tukayyid in 3052.
Armament
The vehicle mounts a 15 ton Thumper Artillery Piece with 40 rounds of ammunition. For self-defense purposes, the vehicle has two Medium Lasers mounted on a elevated turret just above the main body.
Variants
- Thor Artillery Vehicle (C3i) - Comstar refitted their vintage. Their Thumpers armed with only the Thumper Artillery Piece, with 40 rounds. The vehicle is enhanced with C3i network computer to allow better accuracy.
- Thor Artillery Vehicle (Clan) - Equipt with Clan technology, with Thumper Artillery piece with same number of rounds. It features two Clan ER Medium Lasers mounted in the overhang turret.
Vehicle Notes
Not mention in the initial article, the Marksman article in Technical Readout: 2750 mentions Thor fullname to be Thor Armored Fighting Vehicle.[2]
