Overview[edit]

The Battle of Misery was a key battle of the Draconis Reach Campaign.[3]

Prelude[edit]

The contract of Wolf's Dragoons by Combine Warlord Matsuhari Toranaga was a move intended, first, to take the Draconis Reach, a disputed region between the Combine and the Federated Suns, and later, to invade the Sun's space. The badly defended planets fell in a matter of days against the combined Dragoons and Ryuken's might. Only after the Combine had took three worlds, the Suns' dispatched some reinforcements, and the place where they were deployed was Misery. Both by its strategic location and for the historical value of the planet, the Dragoons and Ryuken would focus their next attack on Misery.[4]

The Battle[edit]

The planet was first hit, the 2 June, by a company of armor from the Ryuken-go. In a raid to keep the Davionist garrison' off-balance, they landed with a lone DropShip into Borealis, the northern continent... but found the heavy opposition of the Tenth Hussars, and forced to retreat. The pursuing Hussars' aerospace fighters located the DropShip and destroyed it. When the last surviving tank arrived on site, despite being trapped, fought to the death, and the Davionists destroyed them to a man. The Hussars' commander celebrated the victory... but the General Robert McShane knew that was only the prelude, so began giving orders for when Misery fell.[5]

The 28 July, the main bulk of the Dragoons and Ryuken arrived, landing unopposed in the Hamar Valley. Thanks to the ISF's agents on planet, they already knew the defenders' forces, and began advancing. The same day, a group of Dragoons' tanks located the Hussars and, after attacking them, draw them into a ice maze on a valley were the Ryuken was awaiting. After leting pass the Hussars' vanguard, the kuritans attacked the Davion' Mechs. The advanced company was destroyed, and all survivors forced to surrender. When the bulk of the Hussars arrived, the battle had ended, but they were boxed into a canyon, and the Dragoons launched the second ambush. With the Dragoons Elementals raining fire upon the Hussars, Colonel Ford order his unit to retreat, but they found themselves trapped. Ford later ordered his surviving men to charge, but their desperate attack was in vain, and all the Hussars were downed or forced to surrender. Soon after, the remaining of the Davion's garrison capitulated too. By 2 August, the planet had fell into Combine's hnads. That day, three munitions depot blowned, killing some Dragoons and Ryuken's soldiers, but it wasn't the work of Davionists, but of a Ryuken's group of conspirators which wanted to get rid of the Dragoons.[6]

Aftermath[edit]

The planet was quickly pacified, with almost all the planetary nobles declared their support for the Combine. The Ryuken would garrison Misery, while the Dragoons relocated to other planets. By the end of the year, all the Reach was fully into the Combine's hands, though that still didn't signal the end of the campaign.[7]
